Ubisoft’s upcoming game hub for the Assassin’s Creed series, titled Assassin’s Creed: Infinity, may include a monthly subscription.
YouTuber j0nathan, who had previously shared leaked information regarding Assassin’s Creed Mirage prior to its announcement, took to Twitter/X to reveal that he’s heard Assassin’s Creed Infinity will focus on microtransactions and will have a monthly subscription that is a bit like Xbox Game Pass.
The content creator mentioned that the subscription plan offered alongside Assassin’s Creed Infinity will give subscribers access to all the earlier titles in the series. He isn’t sure whether newer releases will be included in the offer, however. He said that the subscription would also grant players access to future DLC, and an exclusive skin/item per month.
While j0nathan isn’t 100% certain of the validity of this information, he chose to share it either way in order to create some negative buzz and push Ubisoft not to venture too far into this business model, and to possibly reconsider the platform’s economics prior to its release by the end of the year. Despite not being entirely sure about his source’s validity, the content creator said that it wouldn’t be surprising to see, given the manner in which the company has offered paid skins in both Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
We’re inclined to agree with j0nathan, as a Ubisoft executive had recently expressed the company’s desire to embrace a service-driven business model, and it only seems like a matter of time until it follows through on this plan. During a recent interview, Philippe Tremblay, director of subscriptions at Ubisoft, said that gaming audiences are used to having and owning their games, and that this is the consumer trend that needs to change. According to him, as players grow comfortable with not losing their progress and engagement, they’ll start feeling comfortable with not owning their games.
