Baldur’s Gate 3 PS5 vs PC Comparison: Which Platform Is Best

by Muhammad Ali Bari

Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available on the PS5, and if you’re wondering how it compares to the existing PC version, read ahead.

The game offers 2 graphical modes on PS5 i.e. Quality and Performance. In terms of settings, both modes deliver a similar experience, and the difference largely come down to image quality and performance. Meanwhile, on PC, it is possible to run Baldur’s Gate 3 at higher graphical settings and get a better visual experience over the PS5 version.

In terms of resolution, the PS5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 runs at a native resolution of 1440p in Quality mode, which is then upscaled to 4K. In Performance mode, the game appears to run at a lower resolution, likely in the ballpark of 1080p, on the console. On the other hand, the PC version can deliver much superior image quality at native 4K on a capable system.

With regards to performance, the PS5 version targets a frame rate of 30 fps in Quality mode. In Performance modes, it targets a frame rate of 60 fps. Neither mode delivers a stable experience, however. In Quality mode, the game can drop below 30 fps and also exhibits frame pacing issues. In Performance mode, the frame rate is highly unstable, and can even drop below 30 fps at times. Engaging VRR on supported TVs can mitigate the visible judder to an extent, though frame rate drops below 48 fps will still be noticed.

Load times are comparable across both PS5 and PC versions in most cases, though there are some notable differences. Loading from the main menu takes around 40 seconds on both the PS5 and PC. Where things differ is in the amount of time it takes to load from one region to another. On PS5, this takes around 40 seconds, while on PC it takes about 10 seconds, which is a lot quicker. That said, fast travel between waypoints within one region is instantaneous on both PS5 and PC.

All in all, if the option to play on a PC that meets the system requirements is available, it’s best to go that route for a better overall experience. In its current state, the PS5 version can’t be recommended.
