Bandai Namco Announces Ace Combat 8 Wings of Theve for 2026 Release

by Greg Martin

Bandai Namco Entertainment announced Ace Combat 8 Wings of Theve during The Game Awards 2025, marking the first mainline installment in the series in seven years. The publisher confirmed that the game is scheduled for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam. A trailer released during the ceremony provided the first look at the project, which is being developed by Bandai Namco Aces Inc.

The announcement positions the game as a significant technical step for the franchise. Bandai Namco stated that the title uses Unreal Engine 5 along with internal development tools to target higher visual fidelity. The reveal footage featured early gameplay segments and environmental showcases.

Ace Combat 8 introduces a new campaign set in Strangereal, the fictional universe used throughout the series. According to Bandai Namco, players assume the role of a pilot known as the Wings of Theve, a figure associated with the capital city of the Federation of Central Usea. The storyline centers on an effort to reclaim territory from the opposing Republic of Sotoa. While the trailer briefly referenced the protagonists squadmates and narrative themes involving identity and responsibility, the publisher has not released detailed story summaries, mission structures, or character profiles.

Bandai Namco said the game will include multiplayer options in addition to its single player campaign but did not describe available modes, matchmaking systems, or competitive features. Prior entries in the franchise have offered both cooperative and adversarial online play, though it is unclear whether these formats will continue in the new title.

The publisher emphasized visual elements such as cloud simulation, weather effects, and cockpit camera perspectives. These features were described as contributing to a more immersive experience, but the degree to which they alter gameplay remains unspecified. Real world aircraft are expected to be included, continuing a series tradition, though no specific models were confirmed in the announcement.

Additional updates regarding Ace Combat 8 Wings of Theve, including gameplay demonstrations and feature breakdowns, are expected ahead of its planned 2026 release.
