Batman: Arkham Shadow developer Camouflaj has been hit with major layoffs, leaving behind a skeleton crew, according to multiple reports.

Twitter/X user and Batman: Arkham series enthusiast ArkhamVideos has received reports from trusted sources that Camouflaj has been hit with major layoffs following Meta’s recent restructuring, including Batman: Arkham Shadow game director Ryan Payton and producer Matt Walker. They further mentioned that the development team was effectively disbanded, with almost everyone let go, leaving behind a skeleton crew of fewer than 10 engineers and no studio head. The layoffs were subsequently confirmed by LinkedIn posts from senior animator Kaitlin S. and level designer Jordan Pearson.

According to ArkhamVideos, the layoffs didn’t happen due to poor performance from the studio. They pointed out that Batman: Arkham Shadow actually surpassed its internal goals, particularly through Quest headset bundle sales. They termed it as a sad outcome for a talented team that poured everything into Batman: Arkham Shadow. They mentioned that knowing how much they cared about the project and the community makes this even more unfortunate.

Batman: Arkham Shadow is an action-adventure title developed by Camouflaj and published by Oculus Studios. The game was released on October 22, 2024, exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S. It is the second VR entry in the Batman: Arkham series, following Batman: Arkham VR, and continues the storyline established in Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Taking place six months after the events of Arkham Origins, the game focuses on a younger, less seasoned Batman as he works to thwart the antagonist, Rat King, who plans to destroy Gotham City during Independence Day celebrations. The story highlights Batman’s evolution from a brutal, revenge-driven vigilante into a figure of hope, while also exploring Bruce Wayne’s friendship with Harvey Dent and the circumstances that ultimately lead to the latter becoming the criminal Two-Face.
