According to the source, development on the remaster of Tomb Raider Anniversary began in 2019 by first porting the PC version of Tomb Raider: Anniversary directly to Xbox One and other modern platforms. It is then that the project took a major design decision as both teams decided that in order to add more modern features, they’d have to merge Tomb Raider Anniversary’s engine with Rise of the Tomb Raider’s engine. However, the game ultimately ended up getting cancelled in 2021. The source speculated that this decision may have been made due to possible complications with the engine merging process alongside other reasons.

As seen above, the leaked images include high-res renders of Lara Croft. The source mentioned that it is a very early revision of her Tomb Raider Anniversary model. According to them, these assets come from a build labelled “First Playable” that is dated June, 2019, around the time when development on Tomb Raider Shadow was just wrapping up. Furthermore, they said that some of the images are from an extremely early stage in development, as most of the models and assets weren’t yet upgraded to modern HD standards.

As for a new entry in the series, it had previously been rumored that the next Tomb Raider game will feature an “unrestricted” open world and will take place in India. Read about it here.
