The creators of Chrono Trigger have praised Sabotage Studio’s Sea of Stars as a beautiful role-playing game, and they also discussed the possibility of a sequel to Square Enix’s 1995 classic.
Speaking during the J-Wave Radio show “TOKYO M.A.A.D SPIN” (via), Chrono Trigger creators Yuji Horii, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Kazuhiko Torishima praised Sea of Stars as a beautiful game. They said that it looks just like Square Enix’s 1995 classic and that developer Sabotage Studio did a great job.
The Chrono Trigger creators also briefly touched upon the possibility of a sequel to the 1995 classic. They said that it was hard to see themselves working on a Chrono Trigger 2. Both Yuji Horii and Hironobu Sakaguchi are currently involved in the development of their own respective projects. Horii mentioned that he is working on Dragon Quest XII, while Sakaguchi said he is working on a new unannounced game.
Both Horii and Sakaguchi mentioned that what motivates them to keep on making games is that if they didn’t, they’d just be bored. They added that they love games and have fun making them.
Sakaguchi had previously dropped some hints regarding his new project in an interview with Famitsu. He said that his next title will be a dark fantasy game, and that he had already started writing the scenario at the time.
Sea of Stars is a 2023 role-playing video game developed by Sabotage Studio, available on Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is set in the universe of The Messenger (2018). The story features Valere and Zale, as Solstice Warriors, who wield Eclipse Magic to confront the Dwellers—otherworldly creatures crafted by the alchemist known as the Fleshmancer. Accompanied by their friend Garl and later joined by the assassin Seraï, the group battles the Dweller of Woe alongside fellow Solstice Warriors Moraine, Erlina, and Brugaves. Following the defeat of the Dweller, Erlina and Brugaves betray the group, summoning a cult serving the Fleshmancer. The cult uses the Dweller’s remains to resurrect the formidable Dweller of Strife. Seeking safety, Moraine instructs Valere and Zale to confront the Dweller at the cult’s stronghold on Mesa Island.
