A remake of Square Enix’s 1995 role-playing game, Chrono Trigger, is currently in development, according to a known insider.
Known insider John Harker recently took to the Reset Era forums to comment on a thread about a new survey from Square Enix, in which the publisher asks whether there is a Square Enix title respnndents would like to see remade in the future. Among the popular choices in the thread was none other than the 1995 classic role-playing game, Chrono Trigger.
In his comment, the insider claimed that a Chrono Trigger remake is already in development, and said that fans should instead be asking for new entries in dormant Square Enix franchises. “The chrono stuff is already in dev tho. Let’s ask for something else, like opening back up triangle strategy 2 or a legit sequel to final fantasy tactics!” He didn’t mention a release window, nor did he share whether it would use the HD-2D aesthetic or be a full-fledged 3D re-imagining. Those wondering what the former would look like, Japanese pixel artist DottDev recreated Chrono Trigger a few years ago using an aesthetic similar to that of the recent LIVE A LIVE remake. Originally released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Chrono Trigger is widely revered for its innovative gameplay, emotive storytelling, and multiple endings. The game is a product of an all-star development team, including Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, Final Fantasy mastermind Hironobu Sakaguchi, and legendary manga artist Akira Toriyama. Despite its modest commercial performance at launch, Chrono Trigger gained massive critical acclaim and has since become a cult classic among JRPG fans. Given Square Enix’s trend of revisiting its legacy titles and the legacy status of Chrono Trigger in particular, the use of the HD-2D aesthetic seems plausible for a potential remake. However, until an official announcement is made, this remains speculative.
