Here’s How A Chrono Trigger HD2D Remake Would Look

If you’ve been wondering what an HD2D or 2.5D remake of Square Enix’s classic role-playing game, Chrono Trigger, would look like, read ahead.

A 3D pixel artist from Japan who goes by the name of DottDev on Twitter, has recreated Square Enix’s classic role-playing game, Chrono Trigger, in an HD2D style similar to that of the recent LIVE A LIVE remake. The results look spectacular, making us wish the publisher would give this classic the same treatment that it gave to LIVE A LIVE.

A demo walkthrough featuring Chrono Trigger’s Leene Square can be seen in the video above. Another pixel artist appreciated their work, but raised concern that the HD2D aesthetic homogenizes the look of the game, and that part of the joy of Chrono Trigger is traveling across clashing time periods that each feel distinct. In response, DottDev stated that Square Enix succeeded in depicting each time period distinctly in the LIVE A LIVE remake, which features eight different styles. Therefore, doing the same for a potential Chrono Trigger remake wouldn’t be a problem for the publisher.

Chrono Trigger, developed and published by Square in 1995, is a renowned role-playing video game. Initially released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, it served as the inaugural installment in the Chrono series. The game’s development team, dubbed the “Dream Team” by Square, consisted of three esteemed designers: Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Square’s Final Fantasy series; Yuji Horii, the creator of Enix’s Dragon Quest series; and Akira Toriyama, the character designer for Dragon Quest and the author of the Dragon Ball manga series.

Additionally, Takashi Tokita co-directed the game and co-wrote the scenario, Kazuhiko Aoki produced the game, Masato Kato crafted the majority of the story, while composer Yasunori Mitsuda composed most of the soundtrack before falling ill and deferring the remaining tracks to Nobuo Uematsu, the renowned composer of the Final Fantasy series. The game’s narrative revolves around a band of adventurers who embark on a time-traveling quest to prevent a global catastrophe.
