Charlie Cox, widely recognized for his portrayal of Daredevil in Marvel’s television adaptations, recently shared his thoughts on lending his voice to the character Gustave in the 2025 role-playing game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While Cox played a part in the project, he admitted with refreshing candor that his involvement in the game was brief and that he had not personally experienced the final product.
Speaking about the game, Cox remarked, “Apparently, the game is awesome. I’m not a gamer. I have no idea. I haven’t played it.” He explained that the opportunity came to him unexpectedly through his agent, who offered him a brief voiceover role. “I was in the studio for four hours, maybe,” he added, describing the work as a simple and quick process from his perspective.
Despite this limited involvement, Cox expressed genuine happiness for the development team behind the title. “People keep saying how amazing it is. And congratulations. And I feel like it’s a total fraud. But I’m so thrilled for the company. I’m so thrilled. They did really well,” he said. Cox’s humility highlighted a rare disconnect between his modest role in the production and the widespread acclaim the game has received.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, presents a dark fantasy world inspired by the Belle Époque era. The narrative follows Expedition 33 as they battle the enigmatic Paintress – a supernatural entity that annually erases citizens upon reaching a certain age through an event called the Gommage. The game innovates on traditional turn-based RPG mechanics by incorporating real-time elements like quick-time events and timed actions.
Originally developed in Unreal Engine 4 before upgrading to Unreal Engine 5, the project sought to revive the spirit of classic Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy and Persona within today’s AAA landscape. Upon its April 24, 2025, launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, the game achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, selling over 3.3 million copies in its first 33 days.
