Days Gone Original vs Remastered – Is The Visual Upgrade Worth Revisiting?

by Muhammad Ali Bari

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bend Studio’s Days Gone Remastered is now available for PS5, and if you’re looking to find out how it compares with the original PS4 version, read ahead.

Days Gone Remastered on PS5 Pro adds visual improvements in various graphical settings such as lighting, draw distance, textures and level of detail over the PS4 Pro version of the original, with the most noticeable difference being in the increased accuracy of lighting. In addition, the remastered version also features improved shadows and reflections. During daytime, the lighting exhibits a more greenish tone in areas with more vegetation, while the excessive brightness of the original during nighttime has also been eliminated, resulting in a more realistic look.

While the improvements seen in Days Gone Remastered are by no means anywhere close to what was seen in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, they are more substantial than the graphical enhancements seen in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.

In terms of image quality and performance, on the standard PlayStation 5 console, the Performance setting delivers 1440p resolution targeting 60 frames per second, while the Quality mode offers native 4K at a targeted 30 frames per second. A 40 fps mode is also in development and is expected to be added via a future patch. The PS5 version uses native resolution rendering, unlike the checkerboard rendering utilized on PS4 and PS4 Pro, and aligns with the highest visual settings available on the PC version.

For those with a PlayStation 5 Pro, three visual options will be available: Performance mode runs at 1800p with a target of 60FPS, Quality mode pushes to 2880p with a target of 30FPS and downscales from above 4K, and the Enhanced mode delivers 1584p at 60FPS using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). All display modes for both PS5 and PS5 Pro will output at 4K resolution.
