Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima wants AI to handle “tedious task” in order to cut down on development time and cost.
Speaking to Wired Japan, Kojima Productions game director Hideo Kojima discussed how a lot of people AI in creative work to come up with ideas. However, he likes to think of the technology as more of a friend or a helping hand, where he would lead the creative part and use AI to boost efficiency.

The Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid creator further mentioned that he would like AI to handle the “tedious tasks” that would lower cost and cut down on time. He envisions a scenario where he would be “co-creating with AI instead of just using it.” By “tedious tasks”, he’s likely referring to things like handling lipsyncing in various languages.
Members of the Battlefield 6 development team have a similar view on the use of AI in the process of developing games. During a recent interview with BBC Newsbeat, Rebecka Coutaz, VP general manager of the Battlefield Studios in Europe, stated that while generative AI tools were indeed part of the production process, they were only used in the preparatory stages of development, not in the game itself. Instead, she said that it’s used “to allow more time and more space to be creative.” Her statement implies that the final product, from campaign missions to multiplayer maps, has been handcrafted by the game’s designers and artists. Though, Coutaz is optimistic about the future of the technology as a tool that will help development teams in being more innovative and creative.
Fasahat “Fas” Salim, Criterion’s design director, echoed this sentiment, calling generative AI “not anything to be scared of” and clarifying that the team sees it as a workflow enhancement tool, not a replacement for human creativity. “It’s just a matter of how we can incorporate that productively into our workflows, how can we leverage that to take our games to the next level,” he said.
