The Diablo 4 beta is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles, and if you’re wondering whether the current-gen versions are a worthwhile upgrade over the previous-gen versions, read ahead.
Diablo 4 features only one graphics mode across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. In terms of graphical settings, the previous-gen versions exhibit lower resolution textures, shadows compared to the current-gen versions. In addition, the quality of lighting and ambient occlusion is also better on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
In terms of resolution, the PS4 version runs at a native 1080p, while the game runs at 1180p on the PS4 Pro. Meanwhile, the Xbox One version runs at a native 900p, while the game runs at 1440p on the Xbox One X. On the other hand, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions run at a native 4K (2160p). Meanwhile, much like the Xbox One X, the Xbox Series S runs the game at 1440p.
In terms of performance, all previous-gen versions target a frame rate of 30fps, while the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S target a frame rate of 60fps. All versions tend to suffer from stutter in certain instances, likely due to assets loading in the background. All previous-gen versions fare worse than the current-gen versions in this regard, with higher spikes in frame time.
As expected, load time comparisons considerably favor the current-gen versions of Diablo 4, with the PS5 version loading in less than 6 seconds. The PS4 Pro version takes less than 40 seconds to load, while the PS4 version takes over 50 seconds.
On the whole, the current-gen versions of Diablo 4 delivers some worthwhile upgrades over the previous-gen versions, both in terms of graphical settings and performance.
Diablo IV is an upcoming action role-playing game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, and is the fourth main installment in the Diablo series.
