Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy Announced for iOS and Android, Closed Beta Set for October

by Ali Haider

Square Enix has officially announced Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, the next evolution of the long-running Dissidia series, scheduled for release on iOS and Android devices in 2026. The upcoming title introduces an entirely new setting and gameplay format, transporting legendary Final Fantasy heroes into modern-day Tokyo, where they must combat a mysterious energy threatening to consume the world.

According to the game’s official website, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy will feature an innovative 3v3 “Team Boss Battle Arena” system, tasking two teams of players to compete by defeating a massive boss faster than the opposition. Players will accumulate “Bravery” by purifying crystals, unleash devastating “Bravery Bursts” to maximize their power, and then strike the boss with powerful team-based abilities to secure victory. This structure represents an evolution of the classic Dissidia combat mechanics, merging the strategic “Brave System” with real-time cooperative action for mobile platforms.

The game’s narrative diverges sharply from previous entries in the series. Set in a modernized version of Tokyo, the story begins with the sudden appearance of a giant crystal that becomes a part of daily life. When a strange energy begins to corrupt the crystal, monstrous creatures emerge across the city, driving humanity into chaos. In response, mysterious warriors from various Final Fantasy worlds appear, concealing their identities as they battle to restore balance. Locals dub these heroes “ghosts,” unaware that they are legendary figures drawn from across time and space.

Confirmed playable characters include iconic heroes such as the Warrior of Light, Kain Highwind, Krile Mayer Baldesion, Terra Branford, Cloud Strife, Rinoa Heartilly, Zidane Tribal, Lightning, Gaia, and Prompto. Each will feature new designs tailored to the modern setting, created under the supervision of renowned artists Miki Yamashita and Tetsuya Nomura. The game will also feature newly illustrated ability artwork from veteran Final Fantasy contributors including Yoshitaka Amano, Toshiyuki Itahana, Raita Kazama, and necömi.

Customization plays a central role in Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy. Players can collect and equip “Outfits” that adapt their characters’ appearances to contemporary styles, “Memorias” that feature memorable scenes from past Final Fantasy titles to enhance stats, and “BGM” tracks from across the franchise to personalize their battle experience. Square Enix has confirmed that the game will include full Japanese voice acting, underscoring its cinematic presentation.

The closed beta test for Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy is currently open for registration in the United States and Canada, with recruitment available until October 28, 2025. Interested players can sign up via the game’s official website. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the game’s early mechanics, test its server stability, and provide feedback ahead of launch.

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy marks the series’ first new mainline entry since Dissidia Final Fantasy NT (2018) and its first mobile release since Opera Omnia. While the NT installment focused on competitive 3v3 combat for consoles, Duellum reimagines that format for mobile users through cooperative boss-based battles rather than direct team-versus-team skirmishes. It appears Square Enix aims to blend the accessibility of Opera Omnia with the depth and spectacle of the console Dissidia titles, positioning the game as both a spiritual successor and a reinvention of the franchise.

Set to be free-to-play with in-app purchases, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy represents Square Enix’s continued push to expand Final Fantasy into the global mobile market while preserving the aesthetic and emotional legacy of its core series.
