Square Enix’s upcoming fighting game, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, was originally planned to be tied into the Olympics.

To celebrate the release of the upcoming entry in the Dissidia Final Fantasy series, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, Square Enix held a special interview video with the creators (via Genki_JPN on Twitter/X). In his interview, creative producer Tetsuya Nomura was asked about Duellum’s shift in setting to the modern word. In response, he revealed that, around the time before the Tokyo Olympics, there had been early conversations about bringing Dissidia back. Back then, he had envisioned the concept of having the game take place in a modern world setting, and that idea eventually found its way into the project.

Nomura further elaborated that he had been working on a concept where people from across the world, including all Final Fantasy characters, would participate together. “I had been working on a concept where people from all around the world and all the Final Fantasy characters would gather together.”

Additionally, the Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy creative producer mentioned that he had originally planned a story that would tie into the Olympics. “Originally, I was planning a story that would tie into the Olympics – something that would create a huge, chaotic event. But as time went on, those plans fell through and the Olympics were no longer part of the picture.”

For the uninitiated, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy is the newest entry in the Dissidia sub-series, bringing together characters from across the long-running Final Fantasy franchise. The game focuses on 3 vs 3 team-based boss battles in which two opposing teams, alongside roaming monsters, compete to defeat a shared boss faster than their rivals. The action features cel-shaded visuals and streamlined controls designed for one-handed play. In addition to its arena combat, the game includes a fully Japanese-voiced main story as well as shorter episodes that focus on the daily lives of its characters.

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy is scheduled to launch as a free-to-play release on mobile platforms in 2026. Pre-registrations for the game went live last month. Read about it here.
