Microids and Tower Five’s third-person real-time strategy game, Empire of the Ants, is now available on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and if you’re on the fence about which version to pick up, read ahead.
The game offers a single display mode on PS5, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Xbox Series S exhibits some of the usual cutbacks, the most noticeable of which are textures and level of detail. The other three consoles run the game at mostly equivalent graphical settings. On PC, with a capable system, it’s possible to run Empire of the Ants with no graphical compromises and get higher settings compared to PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S versions in some areas, such as shadows, detail level or drawing distance. All platforms use Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen technology for lighting, but none of them feature ray tracing support.
In terms of image quality, the PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X run Empire of the Ants at a dynamic resolution that targets 4K (2160p) as the ceiling, but commonly hovers between 1440p and 1800p. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S runs the game at a dynamic resolution that targets 1080p as the ceiling, but commonly hovers between 972p and 1080p. On the other hand, it’s possible to run the game at native 4K (2160p) on capable PC hardware.
With regards to performance, the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S versions of Empire of the Ants target a frame rate of 30 fps, and successfully maintain it for the most part. On the PS5 Pro, it targets and successfully maintains a frame rate of 60 fps for the most part. Meanwhile, on capable PCs, it’s possible to run the game above 60 fps.
All in all, the PC version of Empire of the Ants is the ideal way to play the game, while PS5 Pro offers the best possible console experience.
