A former Bethesda game designer who worked on The Elder Scrolls series believes that expectations for The Elder Scrolls 6 will be “almost impossible to meet”.

During an interview on the KIWI TALKZ YouTube channel, Bethesda Game Designer Bruce Nesmith was asked about the name Elder Scrolls 6 alone raising expectations because The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was a landmark for open world role-playing games, and the difficulty of controlling said expectations. In response, he said that The Elder Scrolls 6 is undoubtedly going to be an amazing game, but it’s going to be compared to all the previous games that Bethesda made, much like how every studio’s games are compared to their previous products.

Nesmith further stated that a 30-year-old professional artist working on a piece of art can’t control the expectations because they’ve got all this history, and the same is true for the fans who want to buy The Elder Scrolls 6. As such, he said that the expectations of fans are going to be almost impossible to meet.

Previously, the same game designer had mentioned that the game systems that were developed in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be further developed for The Elder Scrolls VI. He added that his “fingerprints” will be present on many of those elements. Regarding the Magic system from The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Nesmith mentioned that he persuaded Todd to let him restart it from scratch. He said that Todd trusted him enough to let him do that, and he believes that there will probably still be traces of the system he designed in The Elder Scrolls VI. He added that it was not his unique idea, but he had a large hand in its conception. According to Nesmith, the development team at Bethesda will continue to use the same concepts for dealing with how the player levels as well as other game systems as the foundation, with a bunch of new ideas thrown into the mix.
