While the oft-rumored Final Fantasy IX remake has yet to be confirmed, a new Play Arts Shin figure and CGI render hint at an updated design for protagonist Zidane.

Zidane from Final Fantasy IX is set to join Square Enix’s Play Arts Shin figure lineup (via HJ Web) with an updated character design that may be linked to the oft-rumored remake. The protagonist’s new design is also featured on the recent cover of Famitsu Weekly (see image below) as part of an official CGI render to celebration of the game’s 25th anniversary.

Previously available as fully poseable figures in both the Play Arts and Bring Arts series, this new high-end action figure pushes the boundaries even further. Utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques, the figure faithfully captures Zidane’s in-game look while offering exceptional articulation for dynamic posing. It maintains a natural silhouette while still ensuring a range of motion. Furthermore, Zidane’s face and eyes can be modified, allowing for detailed facial expressions. In addition to the dedicated stand, the action figure comes with weapons, hand parts, and a second tail.

The official 25th anniversary artwork for Final Fantasy IX prominently features characters Zidane and Vivi.  The visual tribute includes the tagline, “Once more, to the place of memories 再び、記憶の場所へ。,” a phrase that some fans believe may serve as more than just a nostalgic nod. The artwork appears in two variations, one of which was used for the aforementioned Famitsu cover. The magazine includes an extensive 18-page feature on Final Fantasy IX, with interviews from key creative staff, including commentary from character designer Toshiyuki Itahana and composer Nobuo Uematsu, both instrumental in shaping the game’s original vision. This issue also includes an art card featuring the commemorative cover.
