Square Enix has announced that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series has sold more than six million copies worldwide, marking a significant commercial milestone for the modernized collection of the franchise’s earliest titles. The sales figure reflects combined performance across all supported platforms since the series first launched, reinforcing the long term appeal of Final Fantasy’s foundational entries when presented in an updated format.
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series is a comprehensive reworking of the first six mainline Final Fantasy games. Each title features newly redrawn 2D pixel art created by original series artist Kazuko Shibuya, alongside rearranged soundtracks supervised by longtime composer Nobuo Uematsu. The goal of the project has been to preserve the visual and musical identity of the originals while adapting them for contemporary hardware and player expectations.
The remastered titles initially debuted on PC via Steam, as well as iOS and Android platforms, with staggered releases taking place between July 2021 and February 2022. Following their initial rollout, the series expanded to consoles, launching on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on April 19, 2023. More recently, the collection arrived on Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store on September 26, 2024, further broadening its reach.
In addition to visual and audio updates, the Pixel Remaster editions introduce a range of quality-of-life features designed to make the games more accessible. These include options such as auto battle, boosted experience point gains, and the ability to disable random encounters entirely. While these additions streamline progression, they are optional, allowing players to tailor the experience to their preferred balance between challenge and convenience.
With more than six million copies sold, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series stands as one of Square Enix’s more successful legacy projects in recent years.
