Square Enix’s upcoming action role-playing game, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will offer a choice of Graphics and Performance modes, and the game’s open world is inspired by the one seen in Final Fantasy XV.
As part of Paris Game Week, Square Enix organized a community event to showcase Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to the press. Final Fantasy Dream had the opportunity to demo the game and attend a Q&A session with Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi. Technical details gathered from the demo revealed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will offer players the choice of opting for a Graphics or a Performance mode.
The source states that the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo offered the choice between Graphics and a Performance mode, the former of which delivered 4K resolution while targeting a frame rate of 30 fps and the latter targeting a frame rate of 60 fps while running at a lower resolution, likely 1440p if the PS5 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake is anything to go by.
Having tested both modes, the source has mixed impressions. According to them, in the Graphics mode, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth struggles to maintain a consistent frame rate, which makes the experience quite unpleasant. The fluidity of 60 fps is, therefore, more than recommended, though it comes at the expense of certain textures exhibiting less detail than in Graphics mode.
The source also claims that, as was the case with Final Fantasy VII Remake, not everything is technically perfect and there was a lot of visible clipping. They mention that the transition to an open world appears to have led to some compromises, putting the game’s visuals behind those of other open-world games released this year. That said, they acknowledged that the demo ran on an earlier build of the game, and was, therefore, not entirely representative of the final product.
Regarding the open world, the Q&A session with Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that the development team has taken inspiration from other open-world games, including those developed in the West as well as in Japan. However, the studio’s prior open-world Final Fantasy game, namely Final Fantasy XV, has been the primary source of inspiration. That said, the open world in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will feature added touches that make it unique and specific to the universe of Final Fantasy VII.
