Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has hinted at bringing some of the PC version’s upgrades to the PS5 version.
During an interview with Famitsu, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi was asked whether he has received any requests from PS5 players since the PC version was announced. In his response, he said that upon the release of the trailer for the PC version, he received a lot of requests for an update that could bring the graphical enhancements to the PS5 version. According to him, the development team would like to make this happen at some point within the limits of the console’s capabilities.
While the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director didn’t mention anything specific about the PS5 Pro, the mid-gen console likely has plenty of performance headroom available for most of the PC version’s graphical enhancements. However, the base console is likely to only receive the reworked lighting and possibly some improvements to texture quality.
As to why the development team opted to make adjustments to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s lighting for the PC version, Hamaguchi explained that, in recent years, as 3D has become more realistic and physically based, the lighting process can make a big difference in how well a model or scene looks. When the team was exploring areas to improve for the PC version, it decided that it would be best to review and revise the lighting system. He mentioned that he had received a lot of complaints about character faces looking odd when they were under trees or in the shadows. This has also been improved for the PC version.
Furthermore, the region of Gongaga in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has received major LoD improvements, and trees are now more densely packed in comparison to the PS5 version, where the LoD of trees was adjusted to be as far away as possible to mask assets loading in.
