Naoki Hamaguchi, the director behind Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, has hinted at the possibility of the entire trilogy getting a Nintendo Switch 2 release in the future.
During a special Creator’s Voice feature on the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for the Switch 2, game director Naoki Hamaguchi talked about his association with games created by Nintendo ever since his childhood. To this day, he has special fondness for the company’s gaming platforms. He also shared his experience seeing the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. He was very intrigued by the new features and improved technical specs the upcoming console has to offer.
Hamaguchi mentioned that he felt the Nintendo Switch 2 has enough horsepower to run the Final Fantasy VII Remake series he is currently working on, suggesting that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the unnamed third entry may eventually be ported to the upcoming platform. He further said that the console’s ability to run the Final Fantasy VII Remake series is what convinced him to get involved with the development of a Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade port.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy director also talked about the ease of developing for the Nintendo Switch 2. He mentioned that the development process being similar to that of the original Switch makes it easier to transition to developing for the Switch 2. Additionally, he stated that the hardware has a lot of memory, which further makes it easier for developers to create games for it.
Despite developing games for 24 years, this is Hamaguchi’s first time working on a title for a Nintendo platform. He once again mentioned working on the Final Fantasy VII Remake series as a whole for the Nintendo Switch 2, which makes the opportunity special for him.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is set for release on June 5, 2025.
