New details about the third installment of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy have been shared by game director Naoki Hamaguchi during a recent interview with Bloomberg, offering a clearer picture of what players can expect from the concluding chapter.
Square Enix has not yet revealed an official title for the project, nor has it confirmed a release date. Hamaguchi said the wait may not be too long, telling Bloomberg, “I’m hoping it’s not going to be too far in the future.” The company is expected to formally reveal the game sometime this year.
Hamaguchi also suggested the third entry will introduce new gameplay ideas rather than repeating the formula established in the first two games. “We didn’t want the three installments to be a reskinning of the same game over and over again,” he explained through an interpreter. “We want to make sure we’re expanding with every installment in terms of scale, as well as retaining that freshness as you go into each installment.” According to the director, the development team already has the gameplay foundation in place and is currently focused on polishing the experience ahead of release.
During the interview, Hamaguchi addressed several fan theories about locations and gameplay mechanics that could appear in Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3. When asked whether Rocket Town will appear in the game, he confirmed its inclusion, saying it was one of the elements the team had to rearrange during development of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Wutai will also play a major role in the upcoming entry. Hamaguchi noted that the location is one of the story’s key settings, referencing Yuffie’s growing prominence throughout the remake trilogy. “It’s one of the main locations. Yuffie’s made a very prominent appearance, stating her case about her homeland. So if Wutai’s not featured, I think the fans are going to yell at me,” he said.
The Highwind airship, another iconic element from the original game, will also be part of the experience. Hamaguchi suggested it will significantly impact gameplay but stopped short of offering specifics. “We want to expand on the gameplay experience. Flying the Highwind is a very large part of the third installment. Let me leave it at that.”
Some mechanics from the original game remain uncertain. When asked about Chocobo breeding, Hamaguchi declined to confirm its return, stating only that there will be a Chocobo-related element that differs from what players saw in Rebirth. Questions about space travel and underwater sections were similarly left unanswered, with the director hinting at possibilities without providing direct confirmation.
Hamaguchi also briefly addressed locations such as the Great Glacier area. While he avoided going into detail, he suggested that the ending of Rebirth, which places players in the Forgotten City, may hint at how the third installment begins.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is currently entering what Hamaguchi described as its final development push, and the game is already reportedly in a playable state. Although its official title remains unknown, the project is widely expected to conclude Square Enix’s reimagining of the 1997 classic, potentially targeting a release around the original game’s 30th anniversary in 2027.
