Final Fantasy XVI Xbox Launch Sees Weak Sales Performance, Fails To Enter Top 20

The Xbox Series X|S version of Square Enix’s action role-playing game, Final Fantasy XVI, has failed to enter the platform’s top 20 paid games list, indicating weak launch sales performance.

The official Xbox website has updated its most played and top paid games charts (thanks, Reset Era member Macca) based on this week’s player and sales data. It turns out that the Xbox Series X|S version of Final Fantasy XVI, which was released on June 8, 2025, has seen weak sales performance. The game debuted at #431 on the platform’s most played games list and later rose to #364. Meanwhile, in the top paid games list, the Standard Edition of Final Fantasy XVI ranked at #43 while the Complete Edition ranked at #47, both well below the top 20.

The PC version of Final Fantasy XVI was released more than a year after the PS5 launch, receiving an all-time peak concurrent player count of 27,508 on Steam. In its subsequent financial report, Square Enix said that the game did not meet its sales expectations.

The Xbox Series X|S version of Final Fantasy XVI arrived a whole 2 years after its initial launch, so it is expected that sales won’t be as strong as that of the PS5 version, which sold 3 million copies in its first week. That said, appearing at the tail end of the top 50 paid games list is still lower than one would expect for a major entry in the Final Fantasy series. It’s possible that Square Enix has lowered its sales expectations for the Xbox version after the game didn’t achieve the sales it had expected on the other platforms.

In March, 2025, Japanese analyst Hideki Yasuda quoted Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu saying that lifetime sales of Final Fantasy XVI had surpassed 3.5 million copies during the company’s prior financial results briefing. This suggested that the title sold only 0.5 million copies nearly 2 years since after launch.
