Fortnite is Now Playable Without Subscription on Xbox Cloud Gaming

Fortnite is now available on Xbox Cloud Gaming. The popular battle royale game has been available on a wide range of platforms, and it’s now making the transition to cloud gaming. The game has also been playable via Nvidia’s streaming platform, GeForce Now. However, a subscription is required in order to play Fortnite via GeForce Now. This is not the case with Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Fortnite is absolutely free to play on the streaming service.

Microsoft also plans on offering more free-to-play games as part of Xbox Cloud Gaming, and just like Fortnite, they’ll be playable without a subscription. This is certainly an interesting move from Microsoft, as it opens the door for a huge cloud-based user base. It also allows the game to reach untapped markets, as the game is merely a click away from being playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming on a range of platforms.This was ultimately Microsoft’s goal with the Play Anywhere initiative, and it’s finally starting to become a reality.

It was previously revealed during the Epic Games/Apple case that the Fortnite developer saw Microsoft’s xCloud as a competitor in the PC space. Therfore, Epic was reluctant to make Fortnite available on xCloud. However, things have clearly changed since then, and the game is now available on Xbox Cloud Gaming.

For the uninitiated, Epic Games’ Fortnite is an online video game that was published in 2017. It comes in three different game mode variants, all of which share the same basic gameplay. Fortnite Battle Royale is a free-to-play battle royale game where up to 100 people compete to be the last one standing. Fortnite Save the World is a cooperative hybrid tower defense-shooter and survival game in which up to four players fight zombie-like creatures and defend objects with traps and fortifications they can build. Lastly, Fortnite Creative gives players complete creative control over worlds and battle arenas.
