For those who will play God of War Ragnarok on an HDMI 2.1 display, the ‘Favor Performance + High Frame Rate’ mode will deliver the most responsive experience in terms of controls, running at a resolution of 1440p and targeting a maximum frame rate of 120 fps. Those who will play on HDMI 2.1 displays that also support Variable Refres Rate (VRR) can take things one step further by choosing the ‘Favor Performance + High Frame Rate + VRR’ mode to mitigate judder caused by variable frame rate for an even smoother experience. Provided your display doesn’t add some notable input latency of its own with VRR enabled, this is the best way to play the game as far as gameplay is concerned. The High Frame Rate mode in either case will have v-sync disabled, which will result in lower input latency.
On the other hand, those looking for the best possible visual and cinematic experience on an HDMI 2.1 display may opt for the ‘Favor Quality + High Frame Rate’ mode, which runs at a dynamic resolution between 1800-2160p and targets a frame rate of 40 fps instead of the standard 30 fps in the ‘Favor Quality’ mode. Those who will play on HDMI 2.1 displays that also support VRR can take things one step further by choosing the ‘Favor Quality + High Frame Rate + VRR’ mode to deliver a smoother experience by unlocking the 40 fps ceiling with v-sync disengaged, allowing the game to run at a higher frame rate if there is performance headroom available without compromising on the visuals.
