Rockstar Games’ open world multiplayer action game, GTA Online, no longer requires an active PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass subscription, according to a new report.
Multiple sources have reported that GTA Online no longer requires an active PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass subscription. As of writing, it is unconfirmed whether the change is permanent.
The change comes after GTA Online fans were upset about the handling of GTA Online’s availability via the GTA+ subscription, which still required a PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass subscription. The game was a major reason for players of the popular online game to remain subscribed to both Sony Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft’s game subscription services. Removing the online paywall restriction suggests that Rockstar Games may be looking to attract more players before the shift to GTA VI and its online offering.
Rockstar Games insider Tez2 shared earlier this year that the developer will split GTA VI into two editions, where one edition will only feature a standalone online mode while the other will offer the complete package, including both the online multiplayer mode and single-player story mode. Rockstar Games and Take-Two already sell GTA Online and Red Dead Online as standalone titles. However, GTA VI will allegedly be the first entry where the online component will be offered as a standalone release from day one, while the story mode will remain part of a complete package that includes both.
Meanwhile, the PS4 was reported to be the most active platform for GTA Online back in July, 2025. Gamesindustry.biz’s Christopher Dring reported that, according to market analysts Ampere, there are over 20 million active users in GTA Online, out of which the most active platform for the game “by some distance” is PS4.
GTA Online is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC.
