The developers behind Hell is Us have responded to growing community discussions surrounding the game’s PC performance, particularly the mention of a 30 FPS average at 4K resolution with Ultra settings on a high-end NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU. In a detailed statement, the team has offered further insight into what those numbers mean in practice and why players should look beyond surface-level benchmarks.
The clarification comes after the official PC specifications were unveiled, which listed a performance target of 4K at 30 FPS under Ultra settings using a 4090. While this raised concerns among some fans, the developers stressed that the Ultra preset is designed with maximum visual fidelity in mind, serving as a ceiling rather than a practical baseline. They noted that performance projections were deliberately conservative in order to avoid overpromising results.
Crucially, the team highlighted that their Ultra settings incorporate a built-in upscaling configuration that uses only 10 percent upscaling by default. The game employs Unreal Engine’s Temporal Super Resolution (TSR), with additional support for DLSS, XeSS, and FSR—all updated to their most recent versions at launch. By contrast, lower settings apply more aggressive upscaling (up to 50 percent on Low), which naturally yields higher frame rates.
As explained in the statement, an RTX 4090 is capable of achieving more than 30 FPS at 4K Ultra settings, but it may not always maintain a consistent 60 FPS, depending on scene complexity and other variables. The developers reassured players that settings are fully customizable, and users are encouraged to find their own balance between performance and visual quality.
The development team also invited players to try the game for themselves during the upcoming Steam Next Fest demo, noting that real-world performance can often differ from standardized benchmarks.
In addition to these performance clarifications, the developers updated the game’s Steam page to reflect the final, more accurate system requirements. Initially, higher requirements were listed to manage expectations and avoid disappointment.
