The Lies of P demo is now available, and we now have a reasonable idea of how the game will perform come launch on both the PS4 and PS5.
The game offers 2 graphical modes on PS5 i.e. Quality and Performance. The quality mode features better highlights and shadows compared to the Performance mode. In terms of visual fidelity, the PS5 version of Lies of P takes a significant lead over the PS4 and PS4 Pro, with higher overall quality in all settings, especially with regards to texture quality and terrain detail. In addition, the current-gen version offers higher quality shadows and a longer draw distance. It’s worth remembering that this is based on the demo, and that the quality of the release build may change.
In terms of image quality, the PS5 version runs at a resolution of 4K in both modes that is reconstructed from a native resolution of 1440p in Quality mode and 1080p in Performance modes. Meanwhile, the PS4 Pro runs the game at a resolution of 1440p that is reconstructed from a native resolution of 1080p. Lastly, the base PS4 version runs at a resolution of 1080p that is reconstructed from a native resolution of 900p.
With regards to performance, the PS5 version targets a frame rate of 30 fps in Quality mode and 60 fps in Performance mode, and does a good job of maintaining both targets. On 120 Hz compatible displays, the PS5 version offers the ability to enable High Frame Rate for the Quality mode, increasing the target frame rate to 40fps. The Performance mode remains at 60fps, however. The game also targets 60 fps on the PS4 and PS4 Pro. However, it achieves an average performance of around 50 fps on the PS4 Pro and 40 fps on the PS4. As of writing, there is no option available to cap the frame rate to 30 fps on PS4 and PS4 Pro. In terms of load times, the PS5 takes the lead, loading 2 times faster than the PS4 and PS4 Pro.
All in all, the PS5 version of Lies of P delivers a substantially improved overall experience over the game running on PS4 and PS4 Pro, especially with regards to the frame rate.
