Dragami Games’ action-adventure hack-and-slash game, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, is now a remaster rather than a remake, based on the latest information.
According to Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Game Designer, Yoshimi Yasuda, the development team has decided to change the game’s design from remake to remaster based on the request of fans. While this is a bit of a vague statement, it likely means that Lollipop Chainsaw will more closely follow the gameplay and level design of the original. The remaster will essentially be a graphical upgrade instead of reinventing the wheel in terms of gameplay.
Game purists and those who are particular about preserving the original content are likely the ones who requested a remaster rather than a full fledged remake that could significantly alter how the game is played. As such, fans can now expect a familiar experience going into Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP. Yasuda did not mention whether this change in direction will result in a delay.
Previously, Yasuda had shared that Lollipop Chainsaw RePop will include an “uncensored” costume for the protagonist, Juliet, in order to “meet expectations”. What those expectations are is anyone’s guess, but the term “uncensored” seems to suggest that it will be something for mature audiences in the name of ‘fan service’.
The original Lollipop Chainsaw is a 2012 hack and slash game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles. It focuses on Juliet Starling, a cheerleader who hunts zombies in a fictional California high school (voiced by Tara Strong in English, Eri Kitamura in the PlayStation 3 version, and Yoko Hikasa in the Xbox version in Japanese). The game was a collaboration between director James Gunn and game designer Suda51. It was originally published and released in 2012 by Kadokawa in Japan and by Warner Bros. in all other regions.
Players take on the role of Juliet as she battles through hordes of zombies. With her chainsaw, she can perform high and low attacks, dodges, and melee attacks. Zombies can be attacked until they become groggy, at which point a chainsaw attack will instantly kill them. By eliminating zombies, destroying objects, and saving classmates, players can earn gold medals.
