The director of Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 has explained how the story and characters will be different in this reboot.
During a recent Kommunity Chat live stream, Mortal Kombat 1 director, Ed Boon, revealed some interesting new details regarding the story and characters featured in the reboot. He also teased a brand new mechanic that he will discuss in detail sometime soon.
Boon said that Mortal Kombat 1 is, in a sense, a new beginning of the universe. It is not a continuation of the story from Mortal Kombat 11. The characters have completely different roles in this new timeline, and the studio wanted to emphasize this with the game’s title. He stated that it’s a brand new beginning, and all the characters will be reintroduced in their new roles and new relationships with each other.
According to Boon, both Scorpion and Sub-Zero have always been the most recognizable characters in the Mortal Kombat universe. However, Liu Kang is featured on the game’s cover art, as the reboot tells his story. He added that this Kang is a great face to put upfront to punctuate that this is a brand new Mortal Kombat and not a continuation.
Previously, it was reported that details regarding the character roster featured in Mortal Kombat 1 had begun to leak online. GameFAQs message boards member r00000r, who is known for their reliable leaks, corroborated the information shared by another leaker regarding a partial character roster leak for Mortal Kombat 1.
Additionally, it was stated that characters in the base roster can be used as kameos (Mortal Kombat 1’s wordplay on cameos). Therefore, according to the leaked information, all of the characters in the reveal trailer are also usable as kameos. There are, however, characters that will only be kameo, such as new entrants Kira and Hsu Hao.
