Square Enix has updated its official Final Fantasy IX 25th anniversary website with brand-new character art, drawn by original character designer Toshiyuki Itahana. The reimagined illustrations depict the beloved main cast with a modern yet faithful touch, reigniting speculation that a remake of the classic 2000 RPG could finally be on the horizon.

The new artwork arrives as fans continue to speculate about the long-rumored Final Fantasy IX Remake, which has been the subject of multiple industry reports and insider claims over the past few years. While Square Enix has yet to confirm any such project, the unveiling of updated visuals from the original designer has been perceived by fans as a meaningful gesture, possibly hinting at future plans for the franchise.

Rumors Surrounding the Final Fantasy IX Remake

Talk of a Final Fantasy IX remake first gained traction in 2021, when it appeared on a leaked list of unannounced games through the NVIDIA GeForce Now database. Since then, various sources have lent weight to the possibility of its development.

One of the more unusual developments was the emergence of an alleged pitch presentation for an animated adaptation titled Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages’ Legacy. The series, reportedly in development by Cyber Group Studios in collaboration with Square Enix, was intended to serve as both a nostalgic revisit for longtime fans and a fresh entry point for new audiences. The show was to be set ten years after the original game and focus on the magical offspring of Vivi, a central character in the original title. These children—Mel, Doc, Thea, Fala, Luciola, and Koln—would embark on an adventure beyond the city of Alexandria following a mysterious affliction that befalls one of their own.

Unfortunately, the fate of the animated series is now in question. Cyber Group Studios faced financial turmoil and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2024. As a result, it is widely believed that the adaptation has either been shelved or is trapped in development limbo.

While official confirmation remains elusive, some reputable figures in the games industry have continued to support claims that a Final Fantasy IX remake is in development. Jeff Grubb, a journalist known for his reliable insider sources, stated during a recent podcast that the remake is indeed real and is not as expansive as the Final Fantasy VII Remake. According to Grubb, the project is said to retain the original’s turn-based combat and aims to strike a balance between a full remake and a high-end remaster, comparable in scope to Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion.

Another trusted source, the ResetEra user Im A Hero Too, echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that the remake will stay true to the classic gameplay style, appealing to long-standing fans of traditional JRPG mechanics.

Adding to the speculation, Final Fantasy XIV and XVI producer Naoki Yoshida addressed the remake rumors during a live stream. He clarified that although Creative Business Unit 3 is handling several projects, they are not necessarily tied to a Final Fantasy IX remake, and he himself is not involved in any such development. However, Yoshida did not deny the existence of the remake entirely, only his participation in it. He also remarked that a project of that nature would be a significant endeavor, possibly larger in scope than many anticipate.

Square Enix has not yet officially commented on the status of a Final Fantasy IX remake. However, the ongoing presence of credible rumors, along with new celebratory artwork, has kept fan enthusiasm alive. The game’s lasting popularity, critical acclaim, and emotionally rich narrative make it a strong candidate for a modern revival. As the 25th anniversary celebrations continue, Square Enix may have more surprises in store.
