Nintendo Switch 2 Sets US Launch Sales Record with Over 1.1 Million Units Sold in First Week

The Nintendo Switch 2 has shattered US sales records, becoming the fastest-selling video game console in the country’s history. Industry analyst Mat Piscatella reports the system sold over 1.1 million units during its launch week ending June 7, 2025 – a figure that doesn’t even include digital sales from Nintendo’s official online store.

The previous US launch sales record was held by Sony’s PlayStation 4, making this accomplishment a historic moment for Nintendo in the competitive video game hardware market. Initial projections suggest that total market sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the United States could reach between 1.3 and 1.35 million units after all distribution channels are accounted for, but final confirmation will depend on comprehensive monthly data.

The top-selling physical games for the Nintendo Switch 2 during its launch week have also been revealed. Leading the chart is Mario Kart World, followed by Cyberpunk 2077, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. These titles contributed significantly to the console’s strong market debut and reflect consumer demand for both Nintendo’s first-party exclusives and high-profile third-party releases.

This impressive domestic launch mirrors Nintendo’s global success with the system. As previously reported, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold over 3.5 million units worldwide within its first four days on the market, surpassing all prior hardware records for the company. The original Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, had set a similarly strong precedent, but the successor has exceeded expectations in terms of both scale and momentum.

The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces a series of enhancements to its hybrid console design. These include a larger and more responsive screen, upgraded processing capabilities, and improved graphics performance. The newly designed Joy-Con 2 controllers feature magnetic attachments, ensuring greater durability and ease of use. A highlight of the system is the introduction of the GameChat feature, which enables voice and video calls alongside real-time gameplay sharing via the newly added C Button on the Joy-Con 2 controllers. This feature reflects Nintendo’s growing focus on online and social gaming experiences.

Additionally, Nintendo has announced a promotional period for GameChat Open-Access, allowing all users to utilize the feature without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription until March 31, 2026. Post this period, an active subscription will be required to access the service.
