Nintendo Switch 2 May Offer A Wii U-Like Dual Screen Experience

The Nintendo Switch successor, dubbed Switch 2, may offer a Wii U-like dual screen experience, based on the latest rumor.

During the latest episode of the VGC podcast, Chris Dring, head of GamesIndustry.biz, mentioned hearing from his sources that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be a dual screen type product that might, whether it’s actually two screens on the handheld itself or the handheld screen and the TV working in sync in order to deliver that sort of an experience. We’re inclined to believe it’s the latter.

A dual screen experience is something the Wii U offered with its dedicated display on its tablet controller. Several first-party titles took advantage of the feature, but given the console’s limited success, it didn’t get much support from third-party developers. Though, it does raise the question of how this arrangement would work in handheld mode, where there is only one display. Much like in the case of most Wii U titles that supported it, the dual screen experience will likely be optional. It may well be used for having the menu/map screen being available on the handheld display while having the TV serving as the primary display for gameplay.

Prior rumors have suggested that the Nintendo Switch 2 will come with an 8-inch LCD display. Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase had previously reported that a new device from Nintendo will be responsible for a doubling in shipments of “amusement” displays in 2024. According to the source, the aforementioned device, presumably the Nintendo Switch 2, is said to feature an 8-inch display. Earlier, Taiwain’s Economic Daily had shared rumored information regarding hardware specs for the Nintendo Switch 2, including details on the handheld’s display. The source had mentioned that the handheld’s display will have a refresh rate of 120Hz, leading to the possibility of certain games targeting a frame rate of 120fps. It’s currently unknown whether the display will also support Variable Refresh Rate, but it would certainly make sense for it to do so.
