NPD analyst Matt Piscatella has addressed earlier claims regarding pre-orders for the upcoming PS5 Pro not being sold out.
Mat Piscatella, Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst at Circana (NPD), took to Bluesky to respond to The Verge’s Tom Warren, who had pointed out that PS5 Pro pre-orders on the PlayStation Direct store haven’t sold out in the US or UK. Warren believes that the $699 price point will mean the console will be readily available this holiday.
In response, Piscatella addressed the aforementioned concern by asking the naysayers to stick to hyping AI “crap no one wants” rather than saying it’s somehow bad a non-limited edition console hasn’t sold out for pre-orders. He certainly has a point, as pre-orders for the non-limited edition of a mid-gen console aren’t likely to have that kind of demand in the first place. Back when it launched in the year 2016, the PS4 Pro wasn’t difficult to purchase either. It’s also worth considering that, unlike the base PS5 at launch, the new console isn’t offering titles that can only run on it. It’s a premium version of the PS5 that will be better at doing everything the base console already does, and that’s how it ought to be judged from a sales perspective.
As for the limited edition 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro Bundle, it saw an overwhelming amount of demand in both the US and UK, with pre-orders quickly selling out despite its premium price tag. This exclusive bundle commemorates three decades of PlayStation’s impact on the gaming industry. The bundle offers a variety of unique items designed to celebrate the legacy of the PlayStation brand, including the PlayStation 5 Pro Console, a DualSense Wireless Controller, a DualSense Edge Wireless Controller, a DualSense Charging Station, a Console Cover for the Disc Drive, a Vertical Stand, and some special collector’s items.
