A new patent suggests that Nintendo DS emulation may be headed to Nintendo Switch Online sometime in the future.

According to details shared by Twitter/X user MikeOdysseyYT, Nintendo has filed a patent that indicates that the console maker will be bringing DS titles to Nintendo Switch Online (NSO). The patent reveals how dual screen setup of the handheld will be managed on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. Read ahead for further details.

Nintendo DS on NSO – How It Works

According to the patent, there are three methods in which Nintendo DS can work on NSO for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

  1. By having a dual screen arrangement similar to that of the DS, with a parent screen and a child screen
  2. A single screen mode with both DS screens displayed via Picture in Picture
  3. A Switch mode, where the user can alternate between between both screens

The document abstract describes the first method as an information processing system that includes a parent apparatus and a child apparatus. The parent apparatus acquires parent apparatus operation data relating to an operation on an operation device of the parent apparatus and acquires child apparatus operation data from the child apparatus. The parent apparatus performs information processing based on the parent apparatus operation data and the received child apparatus operation data and generates a first image and a second image that is a UI image based on the information processing.

The parent apparatus outputs one of the first image and the second image to a display device of the parent apparatus and transmits the other image to the child apparatus. The child apparatus transmits the child apparatus operation data relating to an operation on an operation device of the child apparatus to the parent apparatus and outputs the other image received from the parent apparatus to a display device.
