The PlayStation 5 has officially become the second fastest-selling console in U.S. history, trailing only Sony’s legendary PlayStation 2, according to new data shared by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella. As of October 4, 2025, the PS5 has sold 26.7 million units in the United States, an impressive milestone as the platform celebrates its fifth anniversary this month. The announcement reflects the continued strength of Sony’s console despite growing competition from both Microsoft and Nintendo.
Piscatella’s report also included updated software sales rankings for the PS5, revealing that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 currently holds the top spot as the console’s best-selling title, followed closely by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The chart, compiled by the Circana Retail Tracking Service, tracks physical and full digital game sales from November 12, 2020, through October 4, 2025. The report states that Sony’s flagship superhero sequel now stands as the second highest-grossing PS5 game to date, solidifying its place among the most successful PlayStation exclusives ever released.
The top ten PS5 games by dollar sales include a variety of first-party hits and multi-platform blockbusters. Behind Black Ops 6 and Spider-Man 2 are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), EA Sports College Football 25, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023), demonstrating the continued dominance of Activision’s franchise under Microsoft’s ownership. Other major titles include Hogwarts Legacy, God of War: Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and the latest entries in the NBA 2K series.

According to Sony’s most recent financial report for the quarter ending September 30, 2025, the PlayStation 5 has now shipped 84.2 million units globally since its launch. This figure puts the system nearly on par with the PlayStation 4 at the same stage in its life cycle and above the lifetime sales of every Xbox console to date. Sony also reported strong engagement across its ecosystem, with 3.9 million consoles sold in the most recent quarter and continued growth in PlayStation Network active users.
The console’s ongoing momentum has been supported by a lineup of major software releases and expanding platform services. Exclusive titles like Ghost of Yotei, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have boosted hardware demand throughout 2025, while new PlayStation 5 Pro models and enhanced digital distribution strategies have strengthened its market position heading into 2026.
