Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake Rated by ESRB

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has now been officially rated by the ESRB, offering fresh confirmation on platforms, content scope, and signaling that a release date announcement may be approaching. The listing applies to Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles, reinforcing the title’s cross-generation release plans. While no date is attached to the rating, its appearance typically indicates that development is nearing a more public-facing milestone.

According to the ESRB, the game has received a Teen rating, with descriptors including Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, and Violence. The rating summary outlines an action-adventure experience where players take control of a Persian prince attempting to break a curse. Gameplay is described from a third-person perspective, focusing on platform traversal, puzzle solving, trap avoidance, and combat against cursed soldiers and sand-based creatures. Combat encounters involve swords and daggers, accompanied by visual effects such as blood splatter, slow-motion moments, and audible cries of pain.

The summary also references a brief 2D side-scrolling sequence reflecting the original Prince of Persia, where pools of blood appear when the prince is killed. In addition, the ESRB notes brief sexual content involving a female character, including implied intimacy between her and the prince, with camera angles obscuring explicit detail. These elements align closely with the tone and content of the original 2003 release, suggesting a faithful but modernized adaptation.

The remake is positioned as a complete reimagining of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, originally released in 2003. Development is now led primarily by Ubisoft Montréal, which assumed control of the project after it was previously handled by Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai. The goal, as described, is a full-scale modernization that preserves the core narrative of the uneasy alliance between the Prince and Farah while introducing entirely new assets, enhanced combat systems, and updated controls designed to meet current expectations.

The project has experienced a notably turbulent development cycle, marked by multiple delays and extended periods of limited communication. Ubisoft last reaffirmed the game’s status during a teaser in 2024, confirming that it is targeting a 2026 release window. With the ESRB rating now in place, attention is likely to shift toward an official update, potentially including a release date reveal in the near future.
