Sony Interactive Entertainment has reported that PS5 sales have reached nearly 55 million units and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has sold over 10 million copies.
In its consolidated financial results for the Third Quarter Ended December 31, 2023, Sony Group revealed that it had ts biggest second quarter in terms of revenue, thanks in part to lifetime PS5 sales reaching nearly 55 million units and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 selling over 10 million copies as of February 4, 2024.
Meanwhile, with respect to the forecast for the next fiscal quarter, Sony Interactive Entertainment expects a gradual decline in PS5 hardware unit sales as well as a decrease in software sales, with no plan for release of major first party franchise titles. In terms of the software breakdown, Sony Group expects a slight decrease in first party software profit, a gradual expansion of third party software sales, and also a gradual expansion of revenue pertaining to network services. The company also expects the the burden of acquisition-related costs to ease in the coming fiscal year. Regarding the possibility of a price cut for PS5, Sony Group stated that a drastic cut on price similar to what the company did with PS4 is difficult, as room to cut on production cost for PS5 is limited in comparison to PS4.
Among the recent spell of leaks involving Insomniac Games’ future titles were presentation slides indicating that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a massive budget of $300 million, and, therefore, needed sales of 7.2 million copies at full price in order to break even. We now know that the game has comfortably surpassed those figures as of February 4, 2024.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s story revolves around Peter Parker and Miles Morales, as they grapple with personal challenges while confronting new threats, such as Kraven the Hunter’s private militia turning New York City into a hunting ground for super-powered individuals and the Venom symbiote, an extraterrestrial entity that negatively influences Parker and jeopardizes his relationships. The gameplay builds upon the established foundation of its predecessors, highlighting the diverse play styles of Peter Parker and Miles Morales as Spider-Men. It enhances their traversal and combat abilities, introducing new web-based gadgets and unlockable suits tied to the story’s progression.
