Capcom’s upcoming survival horror game, Resident Evil 9, was allegedly rebooted after starting out as an open-world multiplayer title, according to a new rumor.

Known insider and horror game enthusiast Dusk Golem (aka AestheticGamer) took to Twitter/X to share some interesting details regarding the development of Capcom’s next entry in its popular survival horror game series. According to him, Resident Evil 9 originally started development in 2017 after Resident Evil 7 underperformed at launch to Capcom’s expectations. As a result, the development team originally made a reactionary decision to distance itself from the seventh entry by going in the opposite direction and making Resident Evil 9 a large open-world multiplayer game. At the time, the game starred both Leon and Jill in a fictional island based on Singapore.

However, Golem mentioned that the development of Resident Evil 9 was rebooted in 2021 around the time Resident Evil Village was released out. By then, Resident Evil 7 had benefited from huge long tail sales, and the prospects for a continuation in the same direction became bright.

Despite Resident Evil 9’s original build being scrapped, Golem said that a few things remained the same, such as Leon being the protagonist. He refrained from sharing any further details regarding the current version of the upcoming survival horror game, saying that he’d rather let Capcom reveal them in due course.

As for Resident Evil: Revelations 3, Golem mentioned that the Rebecca focused title he talked about back in early 2020s was cancelled in 2022. As per him, it was being developed with Nintendo Switch as the lead platform.

Previously, Golem had claimed that the reason Resident Evil 9 has been in development for a long time is because it’s a major “reinvention” of the series in the same manner that Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7 were after their respective prior entries. According to him, tit isn’t going to play exactly like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8, or any of the remakes. He added that the development team is trying new things and that the game is very ambitious. He is almost 100% sure that it will be revealed in 2025, and that its release will follow next year in 2026.
