Capcom is currently working on a remake as well as a film adaptation of its survival horror game, Resident Evil Zero, based on a new rumor.

Known insider AestheticGamer (aka Dusk Golem) took to Twitter/X to share his informed speculation regarding the future of Capcom’s survival horror series. He mentioned that Screen Gems/Constantin Films has a contract in place with the game publisher, which allows it to retain movie rights to the Resident Evil brand. However, it needs to release a new Resident Evil film every 5 fiscal years.

Given the contractual obligation, the next Resident Evil film, which starts filming sometime soon under Zach Cregge’s direction, essentially needs to be released before the end of fiscal year 2026. The previous Resident Evil movie, Welcome to Raccoon City, was released in fiscal year 2021. As per the insider, it has been heavily rumored that the aforementioned film is an adaption of Resident Evil Zero, with Rebecca and Billy in the central roles.

Golem also mentioned it’s highly likely that Capcom will likely strike a marketing deal with Nintendo for a remake of Resident Evil Zero that would be released during the launch year of the Nintendo Switch successor. As a major AAA game in vein of other re-imagined titles, Golem expects it to make a good entry point to the franchise that would be promoted as the “beginning of the story”.  He believes it will be a multiplatform title, though there may be a timed exclusivity window for the Switch 2. According to the insider, there isn’t a better time to release a Resident Evil Zero remake, as it would also tie in with the series’ 30th anniversary as well as Cregge’s live-action movie.

As for Resident Evil 9, Golem claims that it is also on the horizon, and he believes Capcom will be looking to put it on store shelves sometime in 2026. He sees the possibility of Capcom oing a 30-year anniversary celebration, with both Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil 9 symbolizing the “beginning and end of the saga” for this era of the series.
