Sony Raises PlayStation 5 Price in the U.S. Effective August 21

by Ali Haider

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a price hike for the PlayStation 5 in the United States, effective August 21. The company cited ongoing economic pressures as the reason for the adjustment, aligning with trends already seen in other markets over the past year.

The updated recommended retail prices are as follows:

  • PlayStation 5 – 549.99 dollars
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 499.99 dollars
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – 749.99 dollars

Accessories for the console remain unaffected, and Sony confirmed that no other regional adjustments are planned at this time. In a statement, Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said, “Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”

The announcement follows predictions made earlier this year by Daniel Ahmed, Director of Research and Insights at Niko Partners. According to Ahmed, a price hike was likely if the U.S. and China failed to reach a tariff agreement by mid-August. He previously explained that Sony had stocked up on PS5 units ahead of anticipated tariffs and relied on a 90-day tariff pause to support its recent Days of Play promotion. With those measures now concluded, the analyst suggested that a price increase was back on the table.

The move marks the first official price adjustment for the PS5 in the United States, though Sony had already raised prices in multiple regions worldwide. For American consumers, this change could influence purchasing behavior as the console enters its mid-cycle phase and as the newly introduced PS5 Pro prepares to compete in an increasingly demanding market.
