Sony Santa Monica Reportedly Developing New Game Set in God of War Universe

by Salal Awan

New reports suggest that Sony Santa Monica Studio, the acclaimed developer behind God of War, is working on a new project that may be set within the same universe, though the game itself is not expected to be a direct continuation of the franchise as fans know it. Multiple sources, including Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, have commented on the studio’s next endeavor, hinting at a project that is neither a brand-new intellectual property nor a science fiction title.

In response to ongoing speculation within the gaming community, Schreier shared his perspective on the ResetERA forums. “I’ll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one. Maybe that’s why people are confused,” he said. Schreier emphasized that while he cannot disclose more details at this time, any additional information he may report would be published through his formal channels rather than on public forums.

Schreier also addressed longstanding rumors suggesting that Santa Monica Studio was working on a science fiction game. He dismissed those claims, stating that the sci-fi speculation “is nonsense.” His remarks appear to align with comments made by another user on ResetERA, who claimed to have inside knowledge of the project. The forum user described the upcoming title as something unexpected, expressing confidence in its potential. “I can’t wait for Santa Monica to announce their game. I truly don’t know how era will react,” the user wrote, later adding, “At first I was like :/ but then I was like :O.” They also clarified that the game is not a licensed property.

These recent developments follow an earlier report, which suggested that Santa Monica Studio was actively working on a new title with promising progress. Schreier had previously indicated that director Cory Barlog’s next project at the studio was the “next big thing,” and that the development was going well based on discussions with sources familiar with the matter.

There have also been hints of multiple projects underway at the studio. A previous job listing for a Combat Designer suggested that Santa Monica was seeking developers with expertise in the combat systems of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022). This fueled speculation that a new entry in the God of War series might be in production, potentially under the direction of Ragnarok director Eric Williams.

Adding to the intrigue, the LinkedIn profile of Glauco Longhi, Character Supervisor at Santa Monica Studio, mentioned his involvement with a new IP at the studio. Longhi, known for his work on God of War and Ragnarok, returned to Santa Monica Studio after a stint with Striking Distance Studios, stating that he was once again leading the character development pipeline on an unannounced project.

While there is still no official confirmation from Sony Santa Monica regarding the nature of their next game, the combination of industry reports and insider remarks suggests that fans may see a fresh take on the God of War universe. Whether this means a spin-off, a new saga, or a reimagined experience remains to be seen, but it appears the studio is preparing something distinct that could surprise even the most dedicated followers of the franchise.
