Square Enix recently released Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. However, the sales of these games did not meet their expectations. The company shared a briefing discussing their fiscal results, stating that profits did not meet their expectations despite releasing multiple new titles, including major ones like “FINAL FANTASY XVI” and “FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.”
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmed, the sales of the games were underwhelming compared to previous entries in the series. Final Fantasy XVI sold fewer copies than its predecessor, Final Fantasy XV, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth failed to match the sales of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
FFXVI was released last year on the PS5 and has recently launched on PC. However, its PC performance has not been as strong as Final Fantasy XV. The all-time peak concurrent player count for Final Fantasy XVI is currently at 17K, while Final Fantasy XV hit a peak of around 30K. As for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it is currently available exclusively for the PS5, with a potential PC launch expected in 2025.
The user reviews for FFXVI are generally positive, but there are also numerous complaints about its performance on PC. While a demo for PC was released and later patched to improve performance, there are still reported issues with the game, including its demanding hardware requirements. Additionally, the PS5 version has recently encountered graphical bugs following the release of the latest system software update for PS5.
Square Enix has shifted to a multi-platform strategy and has released more of their games on platforms such as Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. They used to offer more console exclusives in the past, but that is no longer the case. This shift is evident from the performance of recent games like Forspoken and FFXVI.
