The Last of Us Part 2 was only playable with 60 FPS on the PS5 but it is also possible to run the game at 60 FPS on a base PS4.
The best part about this discovery is that this one doesn’t require any modding or hack to the console, and it works essentially without much effort.
This was discovered by a user on NeoGAF through accident, as explained by the user. If we reset the display settings of the game on the PS4 or PS4 Pro, it allows the game to run at an unlocked frame rate. This is the case since the last major update that has added 60 FPS support to the game.
NXGamer has also taken a look at this trick and verified that the game does indeed run at an unlocked frame rate. Surprisingly, it runs at a higher frame rate on the PS4 than the PS4 Pro, but again, there is a difference of resolution with the game running at 1440p on the PS4 Pro and 1080p on the base PS4.
So while this is neat to have, it doesn’t appear to do anything substantial in the grand scheme of things. The frame rate hardly manages to hit above 40 FPS. The game appears to be CPU bound rather than GPU which is evident here with the PS4 Pro struggling to run it at a higher FPS despite having a better GPU.
The Last of Us Part 2 didn’t get a native PS5 version unlike Ghost of Tsushima or Marvel’s Spider-Man, but it was updated to support 60 FPS just like God of War and Days Gone.
