The resolution and frame rate for Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom both in the docked and handheld mode have been revealed.
In terms of both resolution and frame rate, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fares reasonably well. Technical analysis confirms that the game runs at a dynamic resolution that goes as high as 900p and as low at 720p when panning the camera in docked mode. FSR is engaged to scale the output to 1080p in docked mode. The maximum native resolution in handheld mode is 720p, with a similar degree of drop below this value as seen in the docked mode. Some of the main cutscenes are low-bitrate video files, with worse quality than what is typically seen in 1080p YouTube videos.
In terms of performance, the game target a frame rate of 30 fps in both the docked and portable mode, and largely maintains it. The pre-release patch has addressed nearly all instances of frame rate drops, and performance mostly adheres to the target. However, using the ‘Ultra-hand’ feature results in a drop in frame rate down to 20 fps, as the game has double-buffer v-sync engaged.
Previously, users on Reddit reported that pirates may have been downloading a potential malware in order to emulate The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in a non-broken state. According to one user, the modded .exe file of the game, which is said to improve scene depth and cloud rendering when running on the Yuzu emulator, was apparently updated from Belarus. As per the Reddit user, someone ran the executable for the duration of an hour, during which it sent 32 bytes of data to an IP address belonging to an ISP based in Belarus. However, the evidence to support the possibility of this being a malware is inconclusive.
