In an unannounced move that seems only fitting for a game steeped in Lovecraftian mystery, Frogwares has released The Sinking City Remastered with update 1.003 today on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The remastered edition of their acclaimed 2019 open-world detective thriller comes at no additional cost to existing owners on these platforms.
Originally developed in Unreal Engine 4, The Sinking City Remastered has been entirely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. The result is a substantial visual overhaul accompanied by gameplay improvements and modern technical features. The Sinking City Remastered update 1.003 includes full relighting across the entire game world, enhanced environments with additional objects and finer environmental details, and support for upscaling technologies such as DLSS, FSR, and TSR. Players can also enjoy 4K textures, improved reflections, and a new Photo Mode to capture the game’s haunting atmosphere. Various quality-of-life enhancements and accessibility features have also been added.
To showcase the improvements, Frogwares released a detailed comparison and launch trailer on YouTube, highlighting the transformation from the original version to the remaster.
“We plan to do big things with The Sinking City IP, starting with the sequel and then beyond,” said Sergiy Oganesyan, Publishing Director at Frogwares. “So, after our rather well-known struggles with the original, it feels amazing to have this positive moment be part of the game’s twisted history and for us to be the ones to fully decide it. Making it free to all our existing fans is our way of giving back to them for having supported us all this time through thick and thin.”
The remaster was initially revealed in March 2025 as part of the Kickstarter campaign for The Sinking City 2. That campaign concluded in April with overwhelming success. The original funding goal of 100,000 EUR (approximately 113,420 USD) was surpassed within two hours, eventually closing at over 553,000 EUR (approximately 627,310 USD), exceeding the target by more than 450 percent.
The Sinking City Remastered is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
