Tormented Souls PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which Platform Is Best?

Survival horror game Tormented Souls is now available on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and if you’re wondering which console manages to stay ahead of its competitor in terms of resolution and frame rate, read ahead.

For the most part, both versions are identical. The game performs well on both current-generation platforms to the point where it’s hard to tell the two apart. The game renders at a native 1080p on the Xbox Series S. No surprises there, but where things get surprising is that Tormented Souls also runs at the same native resolution i.e. 1920 x 1080, on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Other visual oddities include the presence of noticeable camera stutter across all console versions of Tormented Souls, including the PS5 and Series X. This is caused by the camera updating at an inconsistent time interval instead of a fixed step. Meanwhile, cutscenes are letter-boxed, which means that the game’s rendering less pixels than during these instances in comparison to gameplay sections. This essentially means that cutscenes are rendered at a lower effective resolution.

The only distinguishing factor between the PS5 and Xbox Series X comes down to bloom and shadow quality. Both the Xbox Series X and Series S versions of Tormented Soul appear to be missing a bloom effect that is present on PS5. Additionally, shadow quality is also lower on the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles in comparison to PS5.

In terms of performance, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Tormented Souls deliver a stable 60 frames per second, with frame times adhering to a consistent 16.67 milliseconds for an ideal gameplay experience.

Ultimately, it’s the PS5 version of Tormented Souls that pulls ahead due to a slightly better overall visual presentation. Given the choice and at an equivalent price tag, it’s preferable to go with the PS5 version, where bloom is in effect and shadow quality is noticeably higher than on Xbox Series X.
