The Trails Series Surpasses 10 Million Units Sold Worldwide

Nihon Falcom’s Trails series has surpassed 10 million units in cumulative worldwide shipments, marking a major sales milestone for the long-running JRPG franchise. The series has grown steadily since Trails in the Sky launched in 2004, with its commercial reach expanding significantly during the Cold Steel era.

The early Sky and Crossbell arcs built a dedicated following, although the series remained relatively modest in commercial terms during its first years. That changed with the Cold Steel arc, which broadened the franchise’s audience and helped push cumulative shipments to around 4 million units by 2018.

The series continued to build on that growth through releases such as Trails into Reverie and the Daybreak games, reaching approximately 7.5 million shipments in the following years. More recent releases have since pushed the Trails series past the 10 million mark in 2026.

The franchise follows a continuous storyline across the fictional continent of Zemuria, with its various games covering the Liberl, Crossbell, Erebonia, and Calvard regions. Characters, political developments, and events carry across the different story arcs, creating an interconnected narrative spanning numerous releases.

Falcom has started to introduce its series to modern audiences by creating full 3D remakes of earlier games. The first of these remakes was Trails in the Sky: 1st Chapter, which reimagined the original 2004 game with high-definition 3D environments, dual-mode combat, English and Japanese voice acting, and newly arranged orchestral music. This was followed by the sequel, Trails in the Sky: 2nd Chapter.
