Ubisoft has reportedly disbanded the team at Ubisoft Montpellier that was responsible for the development of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
During a video on the ORIGAMI – Plier et déplier le jeu vidéo YouTube channel, French journalist Gautoz claimed that Ubisoft has disbanded the development team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Apparently, the game did not meet sales expectations, and this was cited as the reason behind the decision. According to him, the game’s fate had already been decided a few weeks after its release. He mentioned that, by Spring, 2024, it became clear that after releasing a few DLCs and cosmetics, it would be the end for the title.
Furthermore, Gautoz also shared that a few members of the core development team fought to get a Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown sequel greenlit. However, that did not happen, and the team then pushed for two expansions, hoping to eventually convince higher-ups for a sequel. However, the company needed more staff to help on other projects that had better sales potential. Ubisoft Montpellier’s other major upcoming project is Beyond Good & Evil 2. A few months ago, the official Twitter/X account for the latter had confirmed that it is still in development.
As per the source, another justification that the development team received from higher-ups was that releasing a sequel would cannibalize long term sales of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
For the uninitiated, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is an action adventure game that was released on January 18, 2024, for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game received generally positive reviews from critics. It is a 2.5D side-scrolling action-adventure platformer. The main character, Sargon, can jump, slide, and air dash to navigate between platforms. He wields dual blades for combat and can charge his Athra’s Gauge by executing well-timed parries, enabling a special ability when fully charged.
