Warner Bros. Reveals Minecraft Movie Sequel Title as A Minecraft Movie Squared

Warner Bros. and Legendary have officially revealed the title of the next Minecraft film, confirming that the sequel will be called A Minecraft Movie Squared.

The announcement comes after the enormous commercial success of the first movie, which became one of the biggest video game adaptations ever released. A Minecraft Movie Squared is currently in production in New Zealand and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027.

Director Jared Hess is returning to helm the sequel, while stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa are set to reprise their roles from the original film. The sequel will also introduce a major new character from the Minecraft universe, with Academy Award nominee Kirsten Dunst joining the cast as Alex, one of the game’s most recognizable protagonists.

The decision to move forward with a sequel comes as little surprise given the financial performance of the first movie. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film proved to be a major box office success, opening to a record-breaking $163 million domestically during its debut weekend.

The momentum continued throughout its theatrical run, with the movie earning $424 million in North America and an additional $536 million internationally. That brought its worldwide total to approximately $960 million against a reported production budget of $150 million.

The original film’s success helped cement Minecraft as one of the most lucrative video game adaptations in cinema history and demonstrated the strength of the franchise’s global appeal beyond gaming.

While story details for A Minecraft Movie Squared remain under wraps, the addition of Alex suggests the sequel may place greater emphasis on the core characters familiar to longtime Minecraft players. With production now underway and several key cast members already confirmed, Warner Bros. is positioning the follow-up as one of its major theatrical releases for 2027.

More information regarding the plot, supporting cast, and first footage is expected to be revealed as production progresses toward its July 2027 release.
